Capacity Building for Emergency Response Training: Bringing the B. Maalhos community together to fight against disasters

With recurrent flooding, incidents of household fires and periodic sea swells, B. Maalhos is highly prone to and easily affected by disaster situations. This was made palpable during the Island Disaster Management Planning workshop held in May 2023, especially during the community consultation process where several community members expressed their concern regarding the cumulative damage caused by small scale yet, rife disaster situations. As such, in dialogue with the Island Council and community members, from 11th to 15th February 2024, MRC supported the implementation of a Capacity Building for Emergency Response Training in collaboration with Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and Pakistan’s Rescue 1122.

During the five-day training, participants were introduced to elements such as common hazards, securing family, and preparing for response, components of basic life support, dead body management, fire emergencies, water emergencies and basic search and rescue amongst other crucial aspects of emergency response and disaster management. At the end of the training, participants partook in a simulation exercise where their knowledge and skills garnered through the sessions were tested and assessed.

Through such trainings and workshops, the Strengthening Preparedness and Resilience through Inclusive Community Governance (SPRING) Project hopes to empower communities, build resilience, and increase the overall preparedness of B. Maalhos and islands across the Maldives.
