Empowering Island Communities: Capacity Building in First Aid and Psychological First Aid

Recognizing the vulnerability of islands to natural disasters, the Maldivian Red Crescent in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), supported by USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance has undertaken comprehensive training programs focused on enhancing the capacity of island communities to respond to disasters and emergencies.

During the Island Disaster Management (IDMP) workshops and through conversations with both the Island Council and community members, it became evident that some islands were highly susceptible to disasters and emergency situations – particularly as the communities had not undergone major capacity building trainings or received adequate information regarding disaster preparedness and readiness. As MRC possesses the specialized capacity to carry out Standard First Aid and Psychological First Aid trainings, with support from the MRC Male’ City and Kulhudhuffushi City Office, First Aid and Psychological First Aid trainings were carried out in target islands. As a steppingstone towards building a more resilient community, MRC held trainings for communities in Ha. Vashafaru, Ga. Dhevvadhoo, K. Dhiffushi, and HDh. Finey.  

Key Areas of Intervention

  • Standard First Aid and Basic First Aid: Participants learned vital first aid techniques, including CPR, wound care, and treatment of common injuries – 68 individuals trained in Standard First Aid and 16 individuals trained in Basic First Aid.
  • Psychological First Aid: The trainings focused on providing emotional support, helping individuals cope with stress, and promoting mental well-being during crises – 82 individuals trained.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training: In response to specific community needs, MRC also offered AED training in Ga. Dhevvadhoo to ensure their health center staff are equipped – 21 individuals trained.
  • Public Awareness Sessions: MRC conducted First Aid and Psychological First Aid public awareness programs reaching 211 individuals.

To ensure effective and practical use of skills and knowledge attained during First Aid trainings, MRC also donated three First Aid kits to K. Dhiffushi, GA, Dhevvadhoo, H.Dh. Finey, HA. Vashafaru, B. Maalhos and B. Kendhoo. The First Aid kits were distributed to the Island Council, Health Center and School within each island.

                                                     

These training programs equip community members with the ability to provide immediate care during emergencies, develop comprehensive primary responses, and effectively manage disaster and emergency situations. This not only enhances crisis response efficiency but also fosters confidence and reduces panic among residents.

 

As the Maldives continues to face the challenges of climate change and other hazards, MRC remains dedicated to providing ongoing training and support to strengthen the resilience of island communities.
