Shaviyani Komandoo

In June 2023, jointly with NDMA MRC conducted an Island Disater Management Plan (IDMP) & Hazard Vulnuurability Capacity Asssesment (HVCA) workshop in Shaviyani Komandoo.

One of the key reasons why Sh. Komandoo was identified to conduct the Workshop was due to its high vulnerability to flooding linked to recent developmental projects. The workshop offered a unique chance for the community to understand the island's hazards and vulnerabilities, especially in light of upcoming projects. Over five days, participants gained essential knowledge and tools to successfully implement these projects while mitigating risks.

While 55.8% of Komandoo respondents felt disaster-prepared, 100% recognized the likelihood of facing hazards. Notably, the community saw itself at the highest risk for tsunamis and pandemics. The Hazard, Vulnerability, and Capacity Assessment (HVCA) also revealed recurring hazards such as rainfall-induced flooding, storm surges, and fire incidents.

Through in-depth discussions, participants developed a realistic two-year action plan for Disaster Risk Management. Key stakeholders, including the Council, Health Center, Sh. Atoll Education Center, and Women's Development Committee (WDC), committed to developing individual response plans tailored to their responsibilities and strengths. The disaster management committee's establishment and community consultations were vital steps in this project, fostering shared understanding and community ownership for effective disaster management.

Based on the information and inputs collected from the community, MRC will be implementing Priority Implementation Projects (PIP's) under the project to equip and enhance the community preparedness to disasters and emergencies.
