Where Generations Meet: A Heartfelt Celebration of Senior Citizens

The Maldivian Red Crescent Kulhudhuffushi City Unit hosted two meaningful Senior Citizen events in HDh. Nolhivaranfaru and Kulhudhuffushi City this year, aligned with the global observance of the International Day for Older Persons emphasizing the importance of fostering dialogue between generations and creating meaningful spaces to celebrate and strengthen intergenerational bonds, and promote social inclusion.

These events are part of an annual community event led by the Maldivian Red Crescent to celebrate and recognize older persons across the community. Building on the success of previous years, the 2025 events were expanded and held in two islands Kulhudhuffushi City and HDh. Nolhivaranfaru creating wider opportunities for engagement, connection, and community unity. Through a mix of cultural performances, storytelling, games, and shared activities, older persons and youth came together in ways that nurtured understanding, connection, and continuity between generations.

Supported through MRC's on-going partnership with Ali Fulhu Thuthu Foundation and made possible through collaboration with various local partners, these events formed an integral part of a broader community effort to foster inclusion, celebrate the invaluable contributions of older persons, and build a society where every generation feels respected, engaged, and connected.

A Joyous Evening for Senior Citizens in Kulhudhuffushi

In September 2025, MRC's Kulhudhuffushi City Unit hosted the 2025 Senior Citizens’ Evening, a lively social event that provided elders with a warm, welcoming space to unwind, revisit memories, and share their life experiences with younger generations. From friendly games and interactive activities to reunions with old friends, the evening overflowed with laughter, nostalgia, and heartfelt exchanges. It showcased the powerful role of community spaces in uplifting and engaging older adults, reminding us of the value of shared stories and human connection.

Special appreciation is extended to all institutions and individuals who partnered with the MRC to bring this event to life. In particular, Kulhudhuffushi Stadium, Afiuddin School, and Mr. Badhee'u Zakariyya (Hithigasdoshuge, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi) offered invaluable support in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the festivities.

Senior Citizens’ Day in HDh. Nolhivaranfaru

In October 2025,  MRC Kulhudhuffushi City Unit partnered with HDh. Family and Children Service Centre, the Nolhivaranfaru Council, and other local institutions to organize the 2025  Senior Citizens’ Day – HDh. Nolhivaranfaru.

The event was celebrated with vibrant cultural expressions, storytelling sessions, and historical displays that highlighted the wisdom, heritage, and lifelong contributions of senior community members. Participants had the opportunity to share memories of the past, reconnect with familiar faces, and engage with youth in meaningful conversations that bridged generational perspectives. The event welcomed a large number of senior citizens. Activities were specially designed to represent life, traditions, and social practices from earlier times allowing younger generations to learn about their roots and appreciate the lived experiences of their elders.

Together, these two events highlight the essential role that older persons play in shaping the identity, resilience, and values of our communities. Their stories, wisdom, and lived experiences enrich our collective understanding and continue to guide community development efforts. By creating spaces where elders feel valued and connected, we strengthen social cohesion and foster deeper bonds across generations. As the Maldivian Red Crescent continues its work, the insight and legacy of our senior citizens remain central—informing our initiatives, inspiring compassion, and reminding us that strong communities grow when every generation feels respected, included, and empowered.
